The ‘Millionaires’ District’ or the ‘dead sleeping area’ — these are the names used by the locals to describe the most Instagrammable neighbourhood of the capital, Vozdvizhenka, located in the Honchary-Kozhumiaky tract in Podil. In the 12th century, this area was inhabited by craftsmen, hence the names of the streets and tracts. According to legend, it was the dwelling place of the hero-knight Mykyta Kozhumiaka who saved Kyiv from the man-eating snake.
In the mid-18th century, the wooden Holy Cross Church was built on that site, hence the name of the main street and of the entire area.
In the 1960s, the place began to fall into decay. Then the idea arose to include these territories in the Ancient Kyiv Historical and Archaeological Park-Museum, which, despite long planning, has remained on paper. In 2003, the contemporary construction in the pseudo-historical style began. Now, Vozdvyzhenka is famous for interesting establishments, stylish showrooms, galleries, and shops. This is one of the most popular places for photo sessions and filming.
