About the place
This is one of the oldest streets in the city and even in Europe. Its upper part existed even in the days of Kyivan Rus and connected the Old Town with the craft area of Podil. It is believed that the street got its name in the 18th century, when St. Andrew’s Church was built here. In addition, there are a number of other monuments on the route, including the Castle of Richard the Lionheart, One Street Museum, monuments to Taras Shevchenko, Yaroslav the Wise, Pronia Prokopivna and Svyryd Holokhvastov, etc.
The street is dominated by the houses mainly built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. More than 20 buildings are historical and architectural monuments. Andriivskyi Descent is also called Kyiv’s Montmartre, because here, you can always see artists exhibiting their works. Sometimes artists and musicians perform here. There are many small shops selling souvenirs and rarities, galleries, cafés, and restaurants in the street.
