Prorizna Street
Back in the Middle Ages, the historic earthen rampart of the Old Kyiv fortifications passed through the centre of the capital. In the mid-19th century, a path connecting the Golden Gate and Khreschatyk was cut through it. This is how Prorizna Street was born. It was a first-class street, which meant that only brick buildings of no lower than 2 storeys were allowed to be built here. The Street acquired its modern appearance in the 1950s, following the post-war reconstruction of the city centre.
Several historical monuments built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries have survived in Prorizna, including:
Other interesting sites in the street include a square park, monuments to Panikovsky, the character of the novel The Little Golden Calf; to Turkmen poet and thinker Makhtumkul Fragi; and to Ukrainian artist Les Kurbas, representative of the Executed Renaissance.
