Chestnuts are one of Kyiv’s symbols. After all, chestnuts have been planted on its streets since the 19th century. Kyiv chestnuts have been repeatedly praised in poems, stories and songs. During the Second World War, a large part of the trees was damaged. Immediately after the liberation of Kyiv, the chestnut population was restored. Another devastating blow to chestnuts was inflicted by an environmental disaster in the 1980s and 1990s. As a result of air pollution, the ecosystem was infested with horse-chestnut leaf miner. The lack of natural protection against it contributed to chestnut disease. Urgent preventive measures caused their partial preservation. On the initiative of the Kyiv community, new saplings were planted.
The monument in Mariinskyi Park, which reproduces an open chestnut with the image of a solar boat, is a symbol of revival and at the same time a warning for future generations of Kyivites.
