About the place

Instytutska is a street in the Pecherskyi District of Kyiv, which runs from Olhynska Street and the Heavenly Hundred Heroes Alley to Klovskyi Descent.

It arose at the beginning of the 19th century along the ancient Ivanivskyi Way, known since the days of Kyivan Rus, which connected the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra with the lower part of Kyiv-Podil. At the beginning of the 19th century, in connection with the development of the area, the street was called Ivanivska.

From the 1820s and until 1842, Instytutska Street had been called Behichevska Street, named after General Dmitriy Begichev, the owner of the manor in the area.

In 1842, it eventually got its current name from the Institute for Noble Maidens built in the street in 1838–1842. Later, it became the October Palace, and now, it houses the International Centre of Culture and Arts of the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine. There was also a parallel unofficial name, Maiden Street.

During the Revolution of Dignity on February 20, 2014, a mass shooting of Euromaidan activists took place in the section of Instytutska Street from Olhynska Street to the Independence Square. After that, the dead heroes began to be called the Heavenly Hundred, and the street became a place of paying tribute to their memory. After the end of the armed confrontation on February 18–20, in the following days, thousands of Ukrainians came to Instytutska Street to honour the memory of the fallen Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred. The street was lined with flowers, and later, monuments to the fallen heroes began to appear there.
