The 383-meter long Near Caves represent a labyrinth of underground caves in the territory of the Lower Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra where the relics of the founder of the Pechersk Monastery, Saint Anthony, rest. The creation of the caves dates back to the mid-11th century, when Antony left his previous cell and moved to a more remote slope.
Now the relics of more than 70 saints are kept in the Near Caves, and there are separate niches with bones, which, according to researchers, belong to Kyivites who died during the Mongol-Tatar Yoke. There are also 3 underground churches in the Near Caves: Introduction of the Holy Mother of God, St. Anthony of Pechersk, and St. Barlaam, the Abbot of Pechersk.
