St. Sophia Cathedral is part of the National Sanctuary Sophia of Kyiv, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. St. Sophia Cathedral is the oldest sanctuary that has survived from the time of Kyivan Rus. It was built in early 11th century by Prince Yaroslav the Wise of Kyiv and was dedicated to St. Sophia, the Wisdom of God. It was here that rulers of Rus were crowned and buried, the decisions of the Pereiaslav Council were approved, the hetmanship of Pavlo Skoropadskyi was consecrated, and the Unification Council of Ukrainian Orthodox Churches was held.
St. Sofia acquired its modern appearance in the 18th century, with the reconstruction and construction of the complex in the Baroque style taking place at the same time.
260 sq. m of mosaics and 3,000 sq. of frescoes of the 11th century have preserved in the cathedral’s interior.
