The monument is dedicated to the heroes of the famous film Chasing Two Hares based on the play of the same name by Ukrainian classic Mykhailo Starytskyi. It was created to the design of architect Volodymyr Skulskyi and sculptors Volodymyr Shchur and Vitalii Syvko. The monument was erected in 1999 near St. Andrew’s Church on whose steps the final scenes of the film were filmed.
Several rituals are common among tourists and Kyivites; those must be done near the sculpture, and those are: touching the beetle on the back of Svyryd Petrovych in order to have a strong and happy family, and also rubbing the ring on Pronia Prokopivna’s index finger of her left hand so that a girl can get married successfully.
