The monument dedicated to the outstanding Hetman of Ukraine was unveiled in 1888 as part of the celebration of the 900th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus. The Ukrainian Cossack State was formed during Khmelnytskyi’s hetmanship. He led the National Liberation War against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1648–1657.
Khmelnytskyi was married three times. His first wife who became the mother of all his children, died prematurely. The Hetman’s greatest love and second wife was the ex-wife of his enemy, the Polish nobleman Czapliński, Motrona. However, the couple was not destined to live together for long. In 1651, Khmelnytskyi’s son Tymish executed his stepmother on suspicion of treason during his father’s campaign. The news of Motrona’s death dealt a significant psychological blow to Khmelnytskyi, which, according to historians, could be one of the reasons for the defeat of the Cossacks in the Battle of Berestechko.
