The history of the troupe of Taras Shevchenko National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine began in 1869 as the first Russian opera troupe outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The first performances were held in the second building of the City Theatre. Following the building destruction by fire, a modernist building of the modern opera theatre was built in 1901 to the design of Victor Schröter. Its stage was the largest in Russia, while the hall can accommodate more than 1,500 spectators.
In 2019, the theatre staged 26 classical operas and 41 ballets (primarily classical) of mostly foreign authors.
