This is one of the cultural and historical centres of the city. Since its foundation, the square has been renamed several times. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was called Kinna because horse fairs were held there. Then the square was called Teatralna because of the first City Theatre built nearby; there, famous actors and foreign theatrical troupes performed at that time.
In the mid-19th century, a fountain was built in the centre of the square; it was popularly called ‘Ivan’ in honour of the Kyiv’s governor who initiated its construction. At the end of the 19th century, the first electric tram line, which existed 85 years, was laid here. The square received its modern name in 1991 in honour of the Yevropa (Europe) Hotel, which was built on the site of the theatre. It plays an important role in the lives of Kyivites, because various political actions and cultural events took place here.
