The Institute of International Relations was established in 1944 as a faculty of the same name at Kyiv University. He moved to a modern building at 36/1 Illienka Street only in the early 1990s. The 4-storey building in the functionalism style was built in 1979–1986 to the design of the architects Ihor Shpara, Heorhii Dukhovychnyi, Oleksandr Tamarov, and Oleksandr Notsenko. At that time, it housed the Higher Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. For its construction, it was necessary to destroy the acclimatisation garden planted on this territory by biologist Nikolai Kashchenko in 1912.
The modern Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations trains professionals in more than 20 specialties, has partnerships with dozens of European HEIs, and takes an active part in international programmes. Among its graduates are the former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia; Dmytro Razumkov, Dmytro Kuleba and many others.
