Address
Andrei Pervozvanny square
Andrew’s the First-Called was the first disciple of Jesus and, according to legend, he left a cross on the Dnieper steeps, prophesying the appearance of a great city in that place. For this very reason, he is so revered in Kyiv. The temple-chapel in honour of the apostle on the square of the same name near Askold’s Grave was opened to the 2000th anniversary of the baptism of Rus, and the date of its consecration was timed to the church holiday, St. Andrew’s Day, celebrated on December 13.
Mykola Zharikov was the architect of the neo-baroque church. The exterior decoration with icons in the ceramic painting technique was designed by national artist Liudmyla Meshkova. In the same year, the Monument to Andrew the First-Called was erected opposite the Church.
