In the 1890s, the esplanade of the citadel of the Pechersk Fortress was used for horse races, which became wildly popular at that time, and there the first air shows were also held at the same time. At first, a wooden hippodrome was built here, and in 1915–1916, a modern neo-Renaissance building was built to the design of Valerian Rykov. This location became one of the most popular places for entertainment. The Pechersk Hippodrome had covered grandstands, a restaurant, various halls, and a pari-mutuel. The facility suspended its operations for a while in a time of the October Revolution and the World War II. Following the large-scale reconstruction in 1947, it was reopened to visitors. In 1964, the Pechersk Hippodrome was closed because the equestrian sports complex had moved to Teremky. A children’s sports Pioneer Palace with a stadium was supposed to be built on that site, but a high-rise residential area was built instead.
