The stone house of the Wójt Bykowski, also known as the House of Peter I, is one of Kyiv’s oldest monuments of civil masonry architecture. It was built at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. The first owner of the House was Ivan Bykowski, the Wójt of Kyiv. According to legend, it was Peter I who stayed in the House on his visit to Kyiv. Later, Bykowski’s descendants sold the House. At that time, it was in a miserable condition. Ivan Hryhorovych-Barskyi, the then well-known architect, restored the building, added a two-storey extension, a gallery-loggia between the towers, and a baroque porch. After the repairs, the premises were handed over to one of Kyiv-based shops. In 1799, a prison house was built here, then a parish folk school, and an orphanage. In Soviet times, the Kamienica was divided into communal apartments. Following the restoration in the late 1970s, the House of Peter I housed the funds of the Museum of Kyiv History. Since 2007, the Annals of Kyiv Philanthropy permanent exhibition has been set up there, and the Kyiv Wójt’s Kamienica Museum was opened in 2019.
