The A. Fomin Botanical Garden near the main building of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv was laid out in 1839 to the design of Vikenty Beretti. It’s one of the oldest in Ukraine. The Garden’s area is divided into research and park parts. About 10,000 species, forms and varieties of various plants from almost all climatic zones grow here on an area of 22.5 hectares. The greenhouse complex, which includes the world’s tallest 30-meter Climatron, presents a huge collection of representatives of tropical and subtropical flora, including dwarf bananas, coffee trees, 180-year-old palm trees, 200-year-old encephalartos, as well as about 2,000 types of succulents. There are 8 scientific departments, a botanical museum and a library at the botanic garden.
